As evident with advances in technology changes in social paradigm shifts in economics and countless other variations within the past century one can conclude that education must also take measures to address the subject of worldwide change In this paper Gardners Five Minds of the Future 2008 will be referenced in terms of how American education must rethink current standards for US students competition and productivity in a 21st century global economy The argument will be made that to ensure global competitiveness and productivity US education systems must take measures to ensure students are lifelong learners and problem-solvers ready to engage in future tasks advancements in technologies andor careers that do not currently exist Through this paper we will examine the pathways to change In order to realistically make a change in the vision of education educators must be prepared through university programs that will train future teachers to be prepared in this vision University programs should adequately prepare educators for the student outcomes that American youth will successfully compete in the 21st century global economy We believe that the Five Minds as described by Gardner 2008 are a foundation of future success in worldwide competition Not only does Gardner describe the Five Minds that will ensure success but also describes the need for individuals and organizations to have a lifelong commitment to continue to learnbecause those individuals who can continue to learn and who can help preserve a zest for learning in organizations are a special premium going forward p xviii Gardner states that minds refers to actions thoughts feelings and behaviors that are products of our brainand to nurture these capacities or change these perspectives we will be trafficking in the operation of the mind p xv The Five Minds Gardner proposes are Disciplined Synthesizing Creating Respectful and Ethical Each mind has a clear definition and intent toward individual success The Disciplined MindWhen defining the Disciplined Mind
