Carl Jung is a psychologist who experimented with archetypes and developed theories about them An archetype is an universal symbol that is preconsciously known to man The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien illustrates several of these archetypes Three main parts separate the hero archetype The Fellowship of the Ring illustrates these three parts the separation the initiation and the return The separation is when the hero becomes separated from the normal or when the adventure begins The initiation occurs when the conflicts take place Finally the return occurs when the hero grows throughout the story The main character in The Fellowship of the Ring Frodo goes through all three of these parts The first stage Frodo goes through is the separation This begins when Mr Bilbo Frodos master gives the Ring of Power to Frodo This ring is the reason for all of Frodos adventure and conflicts In addition to giving Frodo the ring Mr Bilbo leaves the village also known as the Shire to travel the land The final part of the separation is when Frodo leaves the Shire to begin his journey This is when Frodo begins the initiation During the initiation Frodo faces several conflicts in his travels Right upon leaving the Shire mysterious Black Riders begin chasing Frodo While evading these Black Riders Frodo must also make his way through the Old Forest which has several dangers also Further into the journey Frodo makes his way through the halls of Moria which hold several packs of orcs and a balrog While going through these conflicts Frodo grows in many ways The final stage in the hero archetype is the return The main characteristic that Frodo gains throughout his journey is learning to be independent Frodos leaving the Shire without his leader Gandalf shows this In the halls of Moria after being reunited with Gandalf Frodo must become more independent because Gandalf dies At the very end Frodo
