Marriages that happen in India and the United States have several distinct differences Marriages in India are based solely on parental decisions where in the United States a marriage is based on individualism Whom and how the spouse is chosen is very different in both cultures Most Americans date to discover who their future spouse is going to be and they know the person very well before marriage In India dating is not something that occurs Most individuals in India do not have any interaction with the bride or groom prior to their wedding day therefore they do not personally know who they are marrying Though these differences exist pros and cons reflect on each of them Much can be learned about our own culture and marriage practices when we take the time to look at other cultures and how they identify the structure of marriage When it comes to issues such as arranged marriages with which we have a solid passionate appeal against we rarely take the time to study that there is another side to the disputeWhen looking at India a country where the majority of citizens even those who have formal education practice arranged marriage it is really interesting to learn that arranged marriage is not something which is fought against or a source of protest among the youth of India The truth surprisingly is the exact opposite many of the youth in India prefer arranged marriages as it gives them the time and the ability to enjoy their youth without the constant struggle of relationships that comes about in United States Allendorf 531 Also the youth in India feel safe in their parents ability to choose an acceptable partner for them believing that their parents have enough skill and understanding to do so without creating a bad relationship The fact that arranged marriage is actually preferred and may even indeed be a healthy and happier form of love than the marriages
