It is projected that by 2050 there will be 19 million elderly individuals in the United States Velcoff Vincent 2010 The aging population is increasing rapidly individuals are living longer their health is better and they are achieving higher educational degrees Velcoff Vincent 2010 This increase in the aging population is important for social workers because we may serve as caregivers at some point of our careers How do younger people see older adults What influences the way that we see older adults and the elderly Undergraduate students that have a close relationship with their grandparents or older adults will have less negative attitudes towards the elderly The independent variable will be undergraduates relationships with their grandparents or older adults and the dependent variable would be the amount of negative feelings towards the elderly The population that our class research project will be using is Fordham undergraduate students from the Westchester Campus only Undergraduate students will be told that participation is voluntary and it will not affect their class grade or class participation Our participants will be given an inform consent and they will have the right to withdraw from the study at any time The students professor will be asked to leave the room when they are asked to participate and take the survey which will be based on their attitudes towards older adults The informed consent will include purpose of the study who is conducting the study it will emphasize voluntary participation and protection of confidentialityHawkins 2004 did a quantitative study of 420 participants in order to see college students attitudes towards older adults Hawkins 2004 focused on comparing the different attitudes between males and females college students and how their attitudes changed according to the age of the older person Hawkins 2004 considered many factors when doing the study such as size of the town where the college participants were currently living as well as the amount of contact
