When I reflect back on working with one of my clients who was suffering from delayed grief I recall being very patient with my client and allowing my client to lead the session where she was ready to go My client needed time talk about her spouse who passed away She spend the majority of the session discussing fond memories smells and favorite past times I thought it was imperative that I be patient with my client and let her become connected with her emotions while actively listening and validating her feelings I learned the importance of meeting the client where they are ready to go and the significance of actively listening and validating my clients feelings After the session my client indicated that she began to feel a bit of release and felt motivated to begin the grief work Another circumstance where I was not as successful in creating a therapeutic relationship with a youth was when a youth informed me that she was going to beat up a classmate at school for stealing her wallet I discussed with the youth my concerns about her choice and informing her not to do this When I did this I quickly recognized that this youth did not agree with my opinion and began to close down She indicated that I dont understand her and regretted informing me of her decision I realized that what this youth needed was someone to listen to her empathize with her feelings acknowledging that she has every right to be upset but working together to think of another solution to the problem I feel that it would have given me the opportunity to strengthen my relationship with my client and allow her to explore alternate options oppose to me advising her not to do this As I reflected on what was different from these two situations I can see that individuals need to be supported not pushed or directed
