As soon as she was born Anna was already a donor for her sister Kate Genetically designed to keep her sister alive and help her survive the deathly disease of leukemia At the age of two Kate was found with bruising all along her back and was diagnosed with a rare and very aggressive type of leukemia Kate would later be in need of bone marrow transplants to keep her alive preferably from a family member with the same blood type That was when Sara and Brian Fitzgerald decided to conceive a baby girl Anna Anna grows up undergoing surgeries alongside her sister Kate and supportive hands of the eldest child Jesse and their parents When Kate needs a kidney transplant Anna visits with the lawyer Alexander Campbell filing a case against her parents for the rights to her body Anna sues her parents for not having the right to choose the operations and surgeries she is put through This rips the Fitzgerald family apart while Kate slowly becomes sicker and is hospitalized During the hearing both Campbell and Sara Fitzgerald question Annas reason to bring the issue to court Anna finally confesses that Kate put her up to filing the case In shock Mrs Fitzgerald denies that Kate would ever do such a thing but Anna explains that Kate is tired of suffering and ready to die peacefully The case is closed and the decision had been made that Kate will not receive the kidney transplant giving her a slow and peaceful death On the way to the hospital from the hearing Anna and Alexander Campbell are killed in a car accident Annas kidney is used to save Kate but Anna does not survive The author Jodi Picoult uses all the characters omniscient point of views to create a story from all perspectivesThe author also uses symbolism as an element in the story One
