Beowulf from the eponymous poem remains as one of the most famous mythological heroes the English-speaking world has seen However skeptics have existed since the creation of the poem questioning his identity as a hero and threatening to change the general readers interpretation of him all the while He clearly fits the definition of a mythological hero wielding godlike prowess taking on tasks for the glory to be bestowed and also for the people These reasons shall be elaborated in order to prove Beowulf evidently as the pristine hero he isFirstly a mythological hero usually possesses godlike prowess and so there are several areas in the epic poem where Beowulf is depicted as a warrior with immense strength For example in Dr David Breedens translation during the fight with Grendels mother Beowulf had broken his sword and as a last resort using his bare hands he seized Grendels mother by the shoulder and flung his deadly foe Beowulf 7198-199 201 It was later mentioned in Seamus Heaneys translation of Beowulf in lines 1637-1639 that Grendels disembodied head was so large four of his men were needed in order to transport it This fact tells the reader that Beowulf has the mighty strength of four warriors an attribute like of a deitys Another section of the epic poem where Beowulfs strength is heard of is when Beowulf speaks to Hygelacs warrior Unferth of his great swimming contest in episode three of Breedens translation Beowulf says of how he had slew nine sea monsters on his swimming contest with his childhood friend Brecca which lasted five nights in the cold weather while wearing chainmail and wielding a heavy sword This feat would seem rather ridiculously absurd viewed as impossible since the weighty chainmail would quickly sink a normal person a normal person would never be able to swim for five full nights out in the sea because of the cold weather that
