Andrew Johnson was born in the year 1808 in the town of Raleigh North Carolina He grew in poverty and was apprenticed to a tailor as a boy Later in his life he and his family ran away from the town of Raleigh North Carolina where they found themselves in Greeneville Tennessee There he opened up his own little tailor shop and made a comfortable amount of money to support his family He later married a woman named Eliza McCardle While at Tennessee he participated in the debates at a local academy Later on in his life he entered into politics He was elected for the mayor of Greeneville in 1834 From 1835 to 1838 he was a member of the state legislature During these times he kept up with his trade as so his public duties one of his recent biographers stated he is feeble in concept and nil in worthwhile results Nash 26 In 1843 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives where he stayed there for ten years After his former place he served as governor of Tennessee for two more years In 1862 he became the military governor of Tennessee In 1864 he was elected as vice president of the United States While under as vice president of the United States on the day of April 141865 the president which was Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and Johnson acquired the position as President of the United States a few hours after Lincoln died Johnson first discussed anything having to do with the Reconstruction with the members of the cabinet On this occasion the Johnson and the cabinet considered a plan originated by Lincoln for the restoration of North CarolinaNash 30 In foreign affairs Johnson allowed himself to be guided by his secretary of state William H Seward Sewards most farsighted act of diplomacy was the acquisition of Alaska from Russia The purchase was made an was declared as
