Before the civil war there were almost no forms of organized sports in America This all changed soon after America boomed in urbanization and industrialization The Industrial Revolution brought many different walks of life to our country and the diversity also brought new hobbies After the civil war the boom lead to a reduction in the religious persecution of frivolous activities and an increase in leisure time sportsIn the 1600s there were almost no sports Colonial people had to work hard to support their families and land In Puritan based colonies the church viewed sports as time-wasting and Sabbath breaking so the only sports that were allowed had to be accepted by the church as useful Sports such as wolf-hunting fishing wrestling and marksmanship were considered acceptable New York with its Dutch heritage allowed golf and boat-racing also The South had an Angelican based belief both religions branching from Christianity and had a looser interpretation that allowed boxing cockfighting and animal baiting Because of the Puritan influence Congress banned these sports but they still occurred undergroundThe early United States was predominately rural According to the 1790 census 95 percent of the population lived in the countryside The 5 percent of Americans living in urban areas places with more than 2500 persons lived mostly in small villages Only Philadelphia New York and Boston had more than 15000 inhabitants People Urbanization of AmericaWhen the Industrial Revolution began this all changed People began to flood into cities to work in factories and shops to make a living Immigration and the growth of technology began to boom and everyone wanted a piece of the action All of this immigration into cities brought crime fraud and class conflict to new peaks A lack of hobbies and a surplus of new leisure time are thought to be the cause The Second Great Awakening brought surges of people into the church This is relevant because the church noticing the higher crime rates
