The cases made against university student Kasyva Viswanathan and artist bob Dylan have gained considerably wide attention Viswanathan a Harvard freshman at the time was accused of copying some excepts from two novels written by author Megan McCafferty called sloppy first and second helpings The Harvard student newspaper pointed out these similarities and since then Viswanathan has apologized for the similarities calling them unintentional and stating she has been a big fan of McCafferty so her work mightve unknowingly influenced her However this case had gained her many criticisms and eventually her books were pulled off the shelves Bob Dylans case although also about plagiarizing gained a much different reaction than Viswanathans The lyrics of his songs from his album Modern Times had discrete similarities to civil war confederate poet Henry Timrods poem Rhapsody of a Southern Night Although this accusation proved to be valid and it was obvious Timrods work was a great influence on Dylans songs he did not get bad reactions from the public who accepted that his plagiarizing ways are a part of his artistry Dylan responded that although he didnt formally give credit to Timrod in his work he did gain him the attention that Timrod would never have gotten other wise which is also a way of giving him credit I believe that both Viswanathans and Dylans cases are valid cases of plagiarism The details from the plagiarized excerpts in Viswanathans book are so detailed that it would be impossible to do it unintentionally I believe that Dylans guilty of plagiarizing as well because he needed to cite and give credit to Timrod whose poems were his lifes legacy In her novel Kaavya Viswanathan directly took some specific points ones that are so precise that it is essentially impossible for it to be unintentional One of the more obvious examples is I was sick of listening to her hum along to Alicia keys and worn out from resisting
