Abstract Body Dysmorphic Disorder also abbreviated as BDD is a severe psychiatric disorder that goes unrecognized and underreported Body dysmorphic disorder is a type of disorder in which someone always sees a flaw in their appearance even if it is minor or completely imagined Body Dysmorphic Disorder is also known as dysmorphophobia which is the fear to have a deformity Someone who has this is a person who obsesses over their appearance for hours in a day and could be so extreme that they cannot function in everyday life Mayo Clinic 2013 Body dysmorphic disorder causes significant distress or depression in occupational social or other subjects that affect mental functioning Ahmed 2013 The individual who has this disorder believes their appearance is shocking to the people around them and do not want to be viewed by anyone Body dysmorphic disorder is a huge concern because the mental illness is so extreme with a suicide rate of 45- 70 supports 24 of the population which is more than schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and 7-15 undergo countless amounts of plastic surgery Ahmed 2013 Many do not notice how extreme Body Dimorphic disorder could be to the victim of it How does someone attract this disorder In some cases the disorder could be inherited but it is commonly shown to developments in adolescent or child bearing years with no regards to heredity As the child gets older there is a growing and the constant burden of obsessing on how someone perceives them as a person because of your appearance An extreme amount of plastic surgery takes place because the client remains unsatisfied each time eventually the patient will begin to feel a loss of individuality Therefore throughout this persons whole life of living with the disorder suicide is very common Body Dysmorphic Disorder is among the top suicidal ratings of mental disorders Even though Body Dysmorphic Disorder could be hereditary and may not be impacted by society society
