In the introduction Duneier talks about his work with the people of the sidewalk He mostly talks about how he got to know what street life was like for Hakim and the rest of the people of the sidewalk that he meets later on In the first chapter Duneier talks about how Hakim is a public character which is anyone who is in frequent contact with a wide circle of people 6 He talks about how people around the neighborhood trust Hakim because he is a familiar face that is always doing things for others Like the deliveryman who trust that Hakim with taking the flowers to the shop when it opened or the old man who Hakim basically saved by calling the ambulance Over time when people see you on the sidewalk there is a kind of trust that starts Theyve seen you so long they walk up to you 18 The rest of the chapter talks about how African Americans are treated what kind of role models they have and what it is like to be a young African American in America When I read the title of the book I assumed that this book was going to talk about what it was like to be a street person like a homeless person I was for sure surprise that Hakim was this educated man who liked being a street book vendor than working at a corporate office What I though was said was that he could not have his diploma because he owed the school 500 dollars because I believe that he could have done more even though he likes what he does The book is a really good insight to what it is like to be a black man in American So far there have been really interesting topics like black books and race in America and how we as a society deal with it I like the book so far
