The audience for books is not expected to have much previous knowledge if any on the field depending on the course level the book was written for Obviously the audience for a graduate level materials book is expected to have more previous knowledge than for an undergraduate book Because of the inexperience of the audience and the entire purpose of books being to educate much of the jargon and technical terms used are defined and explained Again the extent of the explanations varies depending on the level of the coursework Although the terms are usually defined an extensive amount of complex language and jargon is found in books however they are the least difficult of all academic writings in material science The sentence structure found in books is usually more complex than that of journals although the ideas are less complex and almost everything is written in the active voice Books are fairly objective and impersonal however the author tries to make some effort to draw the readers attention and not scare them away The tone is also instructive and fairly formal The formality of the books is also evident in the font and type place which is usually a standard serif font at and average point size with bold face titles and italicized equations and terms Personal pronouns are occasionally used to give the authors personal thoughts or accounts of experiments especially in the introduction There is extensive use of illustrations graphs and charts as wellAs there are exceptions to every rule Sasss book Substance of Civilization Materials and Human History from the Stone Age to the Age of Silicon is the exception to material science textbooks Throughout his book in order to better implement the real-life importance of materials and keep the reader interested he is often giving accounts of personal experiences or mythological stories and science fiction such as Star Treck 9 He writes with a very informal and personal tone often
