There are approximately 782 million dogs owned in the United States and of those dogs only twenty-one percent are adopted from an animal shelter That leaves seventy-nine percent of dogs being sold elsewhere Although there are many reputable breeders across the United States the majority of that seventy-nine percent of dogs are supplied by puppy mills commercial breeders The number of that majority is uncertain because puppy mills use middlemen and the Internet to try to keep from being discovered Puppy mills have made an overwhelming impact on the animals they produce as well as dogs from shelters that are trying to find homesPuppy mills are commercial breeders which mass produce purebred puppies These animals are raised in deplorable conditions that lead to both health and behavioral issues They suffer from inbreeding no veterinary care poor quality of or no food no socialization and dirty overcrowded cages Puppy mills look to make the most profit while breeding and supporting the dogs at the lowest cost Puppy mills were first formed after World War II when farmers were looking for an alternative means of income The United States Department of Agriculture USDA began to promote this practice which gave rise to commercial breeding These commercial breeders began readily supplying purebred puppies to pet stores As more dogs became available more pet stores began to open Puppy mills have continued to grow and remain because of their ability to mass-produce puppies at a lower cost than other breeders Another reason that puppy mills have continued to grow is because they produce adorable purebred dogs which are seen as a sign of status because they are considered better dogs with better qualities than shelter dogs Pet stores have the ability to say that the dogs they are selling are purebred without disclosing where they purchase them from or that there is a possibility of illness and behavior issues among themEach year six to eight million cats and
