The chapter 7 of the book Last Resorts Sailing into the Sunset The Cruise Ship Industry by Polly Pattullo is a critical analysis of the cost of Cruise Tourism in the Caribbean With inexpensive fares and all inclusive amenities against port expenditures these white whales had made skewed relationship with local ports and surrounding outlets Pattullo 193 The central theme of this chapter is who benefits from the Cruise industry is it local government Or the Cruise industry itself After reading the chapter I think that the Cruise industry is the main beneficiary of all the income As Ms Pattullo point out that most passengers spend little time on shore but frequently purchases good at duty free shops that are aligned with ships providing very little revenue for islands It clearly explains that very little economic benefit reaches the people All in all Ms Pattullo examines the environmental economic and social changes that tourism has produced in the region In the following paragraphs I will discuss the role of Caribbean governments and how cruise Industry extract employment field for their own benefits Also I will highlight the environmental impact of white whales on the Caribbean SeaMs Pattullo points out that Taxation has been a thorny issue 196 It seems that Cruise industry issues are associated with Taxation one of them is paying little tax to the government and ship maintenance contracts goes to shipyards in Europe and none of the Cruise is owned by Caribbean national In response to this issue locals Caribbeans are fighting back and they are putting pressure on the governments to take strict action The governments put Head Tax on the Cruise industry but it failed completely because the Cruise industry was against it A good quote to show the power of government is when Royston Hopkin the president of the Caribbean Hotel Association said The cruise ship lobby is very string and
