This essay will be looking at a childs development in relation to thenorms of development and developmental theory I have gathered threeobservations on a child aged two years which have used two differentforms of observation techniques The observations will discuss how theinformation gathered will be used to support planning which wouldsupport the child in their holistic development The essay will considerhow the information collated will influence practice to allow bestpractice to occurObservations are used to gather information on a child or situationAccording to Green 2007 p 164 Observations allow adults to learnabout the child and or their interests on a deeper level As they takea step back and watch the child as they explore their environment Greenstates 2007 p 164 that observations allow adults to see specificchanges in childrens behaviour and develop an understanding of thechilds holistic development One method used is narrative observations they are often referred toas a written record It is the most commonly used technique Walker2009 p 37 This form of observation is used daily in practice it is aquick way of noting down new information a child One of the benefits ofthis method is that it can take place anywhere and you only need awatch pen and paper Walker 2009 p 37 According to Walker 2009p 38a disadvantage of this method is that it can produce unnecessaryinformation The observations contain information such as the childs interests orsomething the child does that the adult has not seen beforeObservations are assessed using developmental milestones Theobservations gathered focus on the childs physical intellectual andsocial development The observations collected occurred within a daynursery setting The observations occurred at different points in theday The time of the day plays an important part in child developmentas observation three shows a change in his behaviour The observationswill be assessed to meet child Js individual holistic needs to promotedevelopment This essay will be referring to the child observed as child J Child Jis the first-born child in his
