There is more to survival than living through a lethal situation According to the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of a life-threatening events such as military combat natural disasters terrorist incidents serious accidents or physical or sexual assault in adult or childhood Often disaster survivors get over their trauma-stress shortly after the event happens however some individuals reactions gradually get worse these people may develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder PTSD There are three main symptoms of PTSD re-experiencing avoidance and numbness and arousal Re-experiencing symptoms involve reliving the trauma These memories can come at a random moment or it could be set off by traumatic reminder Sometimes the re-experiencing symptom causes flashbacks when the memory seems so real as if the event were happening again The reactions are usually emotional but can be physical Fear helplessness and horror are the feelings people with PTSD may feel when undergoing the re-experiencing symptom Avoidance and numbness symptoms involve isolating oneself from certain things and places that remind them of the trauma and isolating oneself from sharing feelings People will make the effort to entirely avoid anything that could remind them of the traumatic event such as dodging certain locations or ignoring certain TV programs People who suffer from PTSD will avoid and distract themselves from certain smells images and sounds Some individuals who have PTSD have a hard time expressing emotions and connecting with other people This is a part of feeling numb Arousal symptoms involve feeling alert easily irritable and on guard at almost all times People who endure this often have trouble sleeping have a hard time concentrating are quick to get angry and frequently look for signs of danger To be officially diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder one must experience three of these symptoms for at least one month after the traumatic event These symptoms can be treated by
