The topic of autism is a very controversial issue Some parents believe that vaccines might cause autism because of the increase of autism diagnoses Three specific hypotheses have been proposed the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine damages the intestinal lining which allows the entrance of encephalopathic proteins causes autism thimerosal an ethylmercury- containing preservative is toxic to the central nervous system causes autism and the simultaneous administration of multiple vaccines weakens the immune system which causes autism However both epidemiological and biological studies fail to support these hypotheses The increase of autism diagnosis is likely caused by increased awareness and diagnosis criteria The MMR hypothesis started when a paper called The Lancet published their observations on 8 children whose first symptoms of autism appeared 1 month after receiving their MMR shot All of the children had gastrointestinal symptoms and signs and lymphoid nodular hyperplasia That led to the translocation of peptides to the blood stream and ending in the brain which causes autism When he published this many people believed him People believed the British Gastroenterologist just because he had authority One of the critical thinking steps is that one should always ask to see the evidence rather than take the experts word But when scientist looked at his research they found several issues First the researchers didnt use control subjects One of the criteria for critical thinking is that all evidence is not equal in quality You have to evaluate how evidence is gathered before deciding if it provides good support Also the assessments werent blind and the data was not collected systematically or completely Both of these issues make the evidence faulty When researchers performed studies to address the questions of whether MMR vaccine causes autism they found no correlation In United Kingdom and California they found an increase in autism despite the stable MMR vaccination rates In Canada the autism rates increased with a decrease in MMR vaccines In Finland the records found that
