Essay question What do you think are the main causes of Macbeths downfallThe play Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare in the 17th century during King James reign Shakespeare is most famous for his comedies and tragedies Many scholars agree that Macbeth is Shakespeares most horrific and violent tragedy With a plot line involving murder and suicide it is a frequently discussed and debated play One of the major discussions is did Macbeth cause his own downfall In a way his ambition and greed for power pushed him towards some of his rasher choices however I believe that he could have turned back at any moment and made the right decision King James the first enjoyed Shakespeares plays particularly Macbeth because it concerned two of his favourite topics politics and the supernatural The play opens with three witches who introduce the main character Macbeth and informs the audience that a battle has just taken place Macbeths troubles start when he meets the witches and they prophesise that he will be king someday From here on Macbeth cannot get the idea of being king out of his head and decides that he will do anything to get to the throne even kill his own king Lady Macbeth encourages her husband and before long several murders have occurred The pressure and guilt increases with each kill and Lady Macbeth cannot take it anymore so commits suicide leaving Macbeth guttered In the final scenes Macbeth sums up his life and questions whether it was all worth it after all people will only remember him as a blood-thirsty traitor Does this make Macbeth a tragic hero or ambitious control freakMacbeths ambitious side ultimately leads to his downfall In the first scenes Macbeth is described as brave courageous and loyal but he hides a dark secret he is extremely ambitious and will stop at nothing to get what he wants Macbeths ambition clouds his judgement and he does not
