The central action which shapes Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garca Marques is the foretold murder of a twenty-one year old aristocrat Santiago Nasar by the Vicario brothers in legitimate defense of their sisters honor The long range of effects of this murder on the citizens of the small Latin American town in which it occurs and their unspoken involvement in the crime itself are revealed in the course of the narrators history In the end the question of whether Santiago Nasar actually deserved his fate remains unanswered Despite the evidence that the narrator has accumulated about why Nasar was killed and how his death could have been prevented the narrator is unable to come to any conclusions I believe that the towns silence was responsible for the death of Santiago Nasar When Angela Vicarios husband discovers his brides lost virtue on their wedding night he returns her to the house of her mother as is his right She is now damaged goods and a disgrace to her family name When questioned Angela Vicario names Santiago Nasar as her violator Drunk from the wedding festivities her twin brothers announce all over town their intentions to meet with Nasar in the morning To explain Nasars apparent ignorance of what is about to occur the town speculates that he is either innocent of the act too arrogant to expect punishment for it or that it is his fate Finally learning about the Vicario brothers intent Nasar shows only confusion Unlike the previous night of happy festivities the townspeople gathered on the streets to greet the bishop and perhaps to witness the murder Everyone who sees Nasar walking to the dock knows that he is going to be killed and understands why When the attack begins there are many witnesses none of whom try to stop it Nasar cries as the Vicario brothers proceed to kill him the latter of whom are oblivious to the shouts
