Though the Mexican-American migration has been going on for decades and well over a century there has recently been growing issues with the immigrants that had not been a problem in the past Past generations of immigrants had practiced circular migration in which they went to where to work was in the north and then returned and cycled through Mexico was still very much their home they just worked in the north Now with the border being militarized and more secure than ever it is harder and harder to continue to cross These recent events have caused people to stay in the north longer and make decisions about where they want to raise their family out of necessity The changing times have had a vast effect on the home cities of these migrants which some consider good and others consider bad These effects are mentioned often in Reben Martinezs Crossing Over and are met with mixed reactions from those living in the city as well as in the northDuring the earlier parts of the century Mexican Immigration was barely even noticed by people on either side of the border The Americans wanted to workers and the Mexicans wanted the money it worked out for everyone The Mexican workers got paid and took their money back down to Mexico to buy their family items that they needed This was fine with the Americans for a while but tensions started to build over different things The threat of terrorism as well as unemployment started to make Americans more interested in securing the border In recent years the economic status of Americans gave them the mindset to keep Americas money in America As the border became less porous many Mexicans started to make second lives in the United States Driven by necessity their lives became more and more Americanized When they had an opportunity to travel back to Mexico they brought gifts with them to give back to
