In the novel The Conformist Alberto Moravia shows the detrimental effects of social conformity through the protagonist Marcello Clerici Marcellos constant worries and contemplation of nature and freedom shows his distaste for the society His carefully planned moves and detailed analysis of normality can be vulgar and even sometimes incomprehensible However with the growing Fascist movement at the time Marcello finds the opportunity to fully conform to society While striving to earn a position in this powerful political state Marcellos abnormalities are revealed as we see his personal adversities supplant his innocence and freedom Despite his abnormal traits the audience ultimately conforms to his point of view and pities him While he displays the stereotypical traits of a Fascist his perverse behaviors show the result of sexual oppression and the confusion of normalcy with conformity The authors sympathy towards Marcello is first seen when he kills lizards for fun It is not killing lizards that is totally inhumane but not knowing that there may be others like him really triggers the audience to think of his actions Baffled of his own inner motives he seeks help to ease his confusion Perhaps it is the environmental factors that excludes him which further degrades his self confidence and values Thus making him believe he is an outsider because of the lack of love and support he receives from his familyThe growing abnormal tendencies create further problems for Marcello during his troubled childhood primarily because of his relationship to his family With no one there to show him love or empathy Marcello kills a cat in an accident while playing the hunting game This is where his psychological problems grow as his fears about his future seem to be confirmed and he worries that he is not normal at all With no one there to comfort him and understand him the audience is able to sympathize with his point of view Although this is mostly accidental Marcello labels
