A Midsummer Nights Dream written by William Shakespeare consists of avariety of different characters Egeus is the father of Hermia who isin love with Lysander also in love with her Demetrius is too in lovewith Hermia who does not love him and Helena is in deep love withDemetrius Since Egeus is Hermias father he has total control of herlife and therefore who she will marry and he is more inclined in thedirection of Demetrius He tells his daughter that if she does not obeyhis choice she will be sentenced to immediate death according to theirlaw Even though he is very well aware that Hermia is in love withLysander Egeus forces her into marriage with Demetrius his much wrongdecision supported by Theseus the Duke of Athens It is extremely harsh that Egeus pushes Hermia to wed Demetrius eventhough he knows her heart belongs to Lysander because he is creating anunhappy life for her He really should not have the right to pick whoHermia marries due to the fact that he cannot be sure of what inspiresher joy As her father he does not know what is going on in Hermiasmind and heart and hence is unable to make the right choice to pleaseher Egeus is not considering his daughters overall contentment and hisselfish decision could affect Hermia for the rest of her gloomy lifeThe heart wants what the heart wants and if Hermia needs to spend therest of her life besides Lysander in order to be happy she should beallowed to Marriage should not be a punishment and Egeus is making it seem likeit is to Hermia When two people get married it should be out of loveand love is a two-way commitment With Egeus forcing Hermia to marryDemetrius over Lysander he is condemning a life of punishment upon herwhen really has done nothing wrong Hermia should have the freedom tolive an easy and simple life not the tough and complicated one herfather is setting
