Bill Cosby once said I dont know the key to success but the key tofailure is trying to please everybody In Arthur Millers Death of aSalesman the main character Willy Loman believes that as long as aperson is well liked then success will come to them His philosophyseems to work earlier in his life but in the changing twentieth centuryAmerica setting of the play Willy and his sons eventually come uponnothing but failure As Willy slips into old age his mind begins to goalong with his financial security and family life His sons cant seemto make any advancements in their lives and care little for theirhallucinating suicidal father Linda Willys wife does all she can butto no avail Throughout Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman failure is arecurring theme seen through Willy his sons and his relationship withhis wifeThe most obvious example of failure in the play is Willys literalfailure to maintain his job as a salesman and his financial stabilityThis is due in large part to his skewed perception of success and hisstubbornness Early in the novel Willy states Be liked an you willnever want33 when speaking to his sons Happy and Biff in referenceto their neighbor Bernard Willy thinks that since Bernard isintelligent but not well liked he wont go as far in life as his sonswho are both very popular Willy is later proved wrong when he discoversthat Bernard has become a very successful lawyer Mr Loman learns ofBernards success soon after losing his own job due to the downswing inpopularity of door to door salesmen Very soon after Charley-Williamssympathy stricken neighbor-offers him a job For the past few weeksCharley has been lending Willy money so he could support his wife andpay the bills Out of stubborn pride Willy chooses not to take the jobfrom Charley and attempt to solve his problems on his own Willyrefuses to accept defeat in an action he perceives as noble he isactually being naive In
