Have you ever peered back in time to see things you have not seen before In the novels To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and A Separate Peace by John Knowles the protagonists Scout and Gene do exactly that The openings of both novels are the characters reflecting on their lives and upbringings in that time The protagonists are developed in their early life through their lessons experiences how the events of that age are present in their own lives The historical settings of these novels have influenced Scout and Genes life immensely The first example of how these characters are developed with regards to history is through their life lessons Scout Finch learns life lessons from the familys housekeeper Calpurnia She learns lessons on behaving with other children and how she should conduct her herself when she is in situations where she needs to control her emotions Gene has to take control of his life and decide what he wants to do when he is faced with the decision of enrolling in the war He must choose if he wants to spend some time in the war or stay with FinnyThe second way how history develops the characters are through their experiences with history Scout experiences going to a black church and making black friends with Calpurnia and Jem She then sits with the black people at the court case of Tom Robinson Gene experiences how the war has taken a toll on his friend Leper when he goes to visit him He sees how Leper is calls himself psycho and had to be taken out of the war This is when he sees that the war has changed his friend and he is now faced with someone who he does not knowThe last way that history develops the protagonists is through their specific lives Scout encounters segregation when she goes to Tom Robinsons trial and she sees how severe the case is
