I sat in the backyard of my Matant Lolotes house watching as my cousinsran around playing with one another I was never really interested inparties Ive never celebrated a birthday party house parties neverinterested me and even just a large gathering of people rubbed me thewrong way even if it was family I looked over to my mom who washolding my younger sister who must have fallen asleep a short whileago and was talking to one of her cousins with a bright smile on herface That was the only reason why we went to those events so that mymom could see her cousins and have one of those loud Haitianconversations which could be heard 4 houses over I sat back and waiteduntil I would be told that we would be leaving soon although I knew thatmeant we would be there for 30 more minutes Just then my Aunt Nicolecame up and handed me a slice of cake my mood was instantly brightenedOne it was cake and two it was my Aunt Nicoles cake She makes acake that so moist and delicious that even if you were full you wouldtry to make room just to eat it I sat back and ate my cake and a fewother things until I was finally told that we could go home it wasalready midnightThe next day I went to school everything was normal - well as normal asany 3rd grade class could get I felt fine when I went to school I wassitting at my desk getting ready for the spelling test for that daythen it hit me my stomach felt like a turkey baster it squeezed itselfuntil all of the contents came shooting out of my mouth onto the darkbrown linoleum floor All of the other kids jumped up from their deskand ran to the door screaming Eww I was rushed out of the room justas the janitor entered with his bucket and sawdust and taken to theNurses
