During the 18th and19th century China and Japan underwent a cultural revolution socially and politically China was heavily influenced by Britain who wanted to keep Chinese resources and materials like tea open to them for trade Britain introduced opium to China because Britain could not keep up with Chinas want for silver to pay for their tea Opium became a resource that all of China was addicted to and their markets would lay heavily on it being imported During the 19th century the Qing Dynasty was going through multiple problems governmentally and culturally Qing Daoguang Emperor wanted to eradicate the opium and Britain from their lands Daoguang Emperor This started the Opium Wars which was fought in two different time frames and China lost both to the foreign military forces Because of the Opium Wars the West started to invest their time into Japan During the Tokugawa Dynasty Japan was isolated from all foreign influences however at the end of the 1830s Japan was also going under a governmental problem Shirokauer Brown and Gay p 412 The people saw that the Dynasty made them isolated and weak against any foreign influencers Shirokauer Brown and Gay p 412 At first many of the foreign powers saw Japan weak and did not want anything to do with them However once the Wars started countries like the US saw them as an asset The US wanted to have Japan open up to them and others because they were a in between place which each country could use for trading and gassing their ships up Because Japan had been isolated for many years they did not have a hatred for the foreigners and wanted to gain knowledge from them to better their country Although both China and Japan were influenced heavily by Westernization the countries changed politically and socially while moving towards modernization and prosperityIn the late 18th century the Qing government underwent multiple changes because of pressures from
