You look down and you see two names on the ballot John Sanders and Eugene Hefflefinger You do not know either person because you did not have time to look up their platforms before you came to vote You vote for John Sanders because who would want a man named Eugene Hefflefinger as President Like the majority of Americans means other than what you know about the candidate influence your decision Politics is greatly affected by who can influence the most people through means other than their political credentials The voters today who do not know much about politics act similarly to the civilian mob in ancient Rome In Rome political figures could easily sway the Roman mob to influence political outcomes by giving great speeches and bribing the mob in America today many voters remain uneducated on the subject of politics and political figures also persuade these voters with the use ofpublic appearances and television advertisementsAlthough Rome had a sound Republican government the Roman system of government did not seem to work inside the city of Rome itself Van Doren 85 The citizens in the city did not need to work because the state supported them with daily rations of food This created a large group of non-working and unruly people that we now refer to as the Roman mob Most of the mob consisted of Plebeians who lived in Rome and joined together in large groups Gray This mob played a key role in Roman politics As stated by Van Doren A political orator could sway the mob control it and get it to do what he wanted Van Doren 85 The mob contained so many people that it could secure a politician a place in office because of the vast influence of having such a large group The mob could guarantee a win in an election by simply having enough people to vote for a certain candidate but often the mob
