My Lebanese heritage is something that I have been very proud of for my whole life but it is not only my heritage that I am proud of but also my Melkite Catholic religion which has its roots in Lebanon Unfortunately nearly every time we turn on the world news anymore we see something about Lebanon and some sort of uprising from either the people of Lebanon or surrounding areas My family history has opened my eyes to research what caused the Civil War of Lebanon in 1975 what went on and how the war ended in 1990 Since its early days Lebanon has been a place in the Middle East that has been fought over time and time again but why is there so much hatred and war in this part of the world we call the Holy Land The Lebanese political power was split between a president prime minister and a parliament The Parliament at this time was split between Christians and Muslims in a 6 to 5 ratio respectively In the mid- 1960s the Muslim community became very open about their dislike of the uneven system especially since at the time there was a higher rate of Muslim births as well as a higher rate of Christians leaving the country The Muslim people were outraged with the disproportion of the system but the Christian leaders refused to allow change to the amount of power they held The religious and political tensions continued to grow with small conflicts between the Lebanese National Movement the Muslim political group and the Phalange the Christian political group until one Sunday morning On April 13th 1975 gunmen in a speeding car attempted to assassinate the Maronite Phalangist leader Pierre Gemayel as he was walking out of Sunday mass in Beirut the capital of Lebanon mostly held by Phalangist power Although Gemayel was unharmed four people were killed including two Maronite
