1 Identify and define the three main cognitive theories There are three important cognitive theories The three cognitive theories are Piagets developmental theory Lev Vygotskys social cultural cognitive theory and the information process theory Piaget believed that children go through four stages of cognitive development in order to be able to understand the world Organization and adaptation are the two processes that allow us to make sense of our world He also states that we go through four stages that allow us to understand the world For each stage the child views the world differently His first stage is sensorimotor stage which starts when the child is born until 2 years old In this stage the child is only aware of what is in front of them Preoperational stage is the second one This stage begins at age 2 until 7 years of age In this stage children go beyond sensory perception children are able to think about thinks symbolically The third is concrete operational stage This stage lasts from 7 to 11 years of age During this stage the child becomes aware of their surroundings They are less self-centered The last state is the formal operational stage which begins at age 11 to 15 years of age This stage allows the child to think in abstract and logical ways Lev Vigotskis theory focuses on how culture and social interaction lead cognitive development He believed that social interaction plays an important role in the way we develop cognitively The Information-Processing Theory views the mind as a system that processes information 2 Compare and contrast Skinners operant conditioning and Banduras social cognitive theory Describe prenatal developmentSkinners operant conditioning and Banduras social cognitive theory both state that the environment plays an important factor in a persons cognitive development
