The title of a Great American Novel is addressed to books thatrepresent an important time in United States history These novelsunfold their stories while expressing certain time frames underlyingtheir work Fitzgeralds The Great Gatsby and ONeills Netherland haveaccomplished this criteria Each novel executes a different story butif we take a closer look in many instances they both share commonideas One of the most manifest themes is the American Dream thateveryone wants to make reality for themselves For each novel we beginto understand the various conflicts that certain characters undergo whenfaced with different conditions internal conflict with one self beingthe most common Although weve already discussed that each novel tellsus about certain times in American history both mainly occupy the NewYork area as their central setting In many cases we even witnesssimilar characteristics between individuals from each novel Not onlythat but the relationship amongst characters in one novel alsoresembles relationships in the other To give the story a deepermeaning the novelists used many different symbols but the most similarone was keeping a God-like figure to overlook sinister people Clearlythere are many similarities so exactly what differentiates each novelWell first off despite their common location each story takes placeat different times Secondly the plot The Great Gatsby is a meaningfulbook but mainly focuses on a love story between Gatsby and Daisy whileNetherland focuses on the importance of family relationshipsdiscrimination in society and the subculture of cricket Lastly thecharacters Aside from discussing similarities between each individualwe can also see how each character exhibits their own unique personalitythat makes them different So both novels tell a different story butboth authors use similar concepts in many casesOne of the most obvious concepts portrayed by Netherland and The GreatGatsby is the American Dream-- an idea that anyone can live a happy andsuccessful life if they work hard and so thats what everyone did JayGatsby Nick Carraway Hans Van der Broek and Chuck Ramkissoonalthough these characters come from either books
