Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville are two famous author for publishing two of the most memorable works in the nineteenth century American literature Both stories Young Goodman Brown and Bartleby the Scrivener potrays their protagonists who withdraw themselves from society but with different reasons Although Young Goodman Brown and Bartleby both disconnect themselves from other people and have to confront the pressure of their societies they come from different communities leading them to react to their situations differentlyBartleby and Young Goodman Brown live in different communities while Bartleby lives in a big city New York Young Goodman Brown lives in a rural place Salem Village On Wall Street New York where Bartleby live is a developing and crowded place for working people On the week days there are full of people however when weekend comes no one is aroundWall Street desmonstrate peoples desireability of making money To these people wealth is the goal they only focus on working and earning money leading to a problem that nobody actually pays attention to someone like Bartleby In factthis community treats someone based on his or her working productivity Therefore if Bartleby is a good worker he will be accepted as a a part of this community but if he is not he will be rejected In contrast Young Goodman Brown lives in Samlem Village a rural place where people live and take part in daily activity together such as going to church People in this community are tied firmly by their common beliefs in religion Therefore Young Goodman Brown is always accepted as a part of his societyBoth Bartleby and Young Goodman Brown suffer the pressure of their communities power however each character reacts to their situations differently For Bartleby the pressure of business and financial life on Wall Street leaves negative effects on him Everyone just concentrates on their works and no one cares for him Bartleby eventually finds himself being traped within the
