More than a century has passed since Dracula by Bram Stoker came out The novel still influences our culture and society today challenging many writers to trying to recreate vampires in a modern light The image of the vampire is continuously changing in this modern world The societys image of the vampire has changed over time shaping it into what readers desire Vampires have traditionally been monsters that evoke fear in people Today the figure of the vampire is glorified and adored it has reached the iconic figure comparable to that of a pop star This is most certainly the case for the vampires in the works of Stephanie Meyers Twilight series Dracula on the other hand is a classic and the Victorian Era suits the vampire story much better than modern day vampire stories When Stoker originally wrote Dracula people wanted a creature that could scare them thrill them keep them on the edge of their seat but in the Twilight crazed world of today the vampires image is that of the courageous hero who abstains from committing the deeds his predecessors have done People today arent looking for an image that scares them Todays society in general finds heroes more appealing They dont want to be scared by the vampire with its dreadful looks and evil ways they want a sexy gorgeous more human character that they can sympathize with The image of the evil murderous blood thirsty creature of the night has been replaced with the handsome perfect almost human hero who is constantly fighting the forces of evil both internal and external Meyers vampires are perfect examples of the 21st century monsters transformed into virtuous boyfriend candidates with a tint of bad boy charm Stephanie Meyer changed the stereotypical blood-sucking vampire into a beautiful god-like creature Meyer wrote a novel that speaks to most teenage girls secret fantasy that one day a boy will fall in love with
