Compare and contrast the protagonists from TWO of the coming-of-age texts How does each of these characters come of age Is the process similar or differentThe novels To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson are both coming-of-age texts with the protagonists being thirteen year old boys Jem Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird lives with his father Atticus and sister Scout in the little town of Maycomb Alabama stricken with poverty and prejudice Likewise Jess Aarons from Bridge to Terabithia lives in a poor and small town with his family in a southern state of the United States Both characters come of age differently and when comparing and contrasting this process we can see the similarities and differences A major event in To Kill a Mockingbird that aids Jems coming-of-age is the event of Boo Radley leaving the gifts in the knothole in one of the Radleys oak trees and in particular the soap dolls These symbolise that Boo has been watching the children for quite some time and is trying to communicate with them Likewise the children find a spelling medal and other valuable objects such as a pocket watch in the knothole While Paterson tells this in the perspective of Scout we are still able to see that Jem is understanding the deeper meaning the issue that is that Boo Radley is trying to communicate with them and that he is not such a horrible man The book is told from younger Scouts perspective however older Scouts voice is also shown and she is telling us about Jems realization This technique contrasts with Bridge to Terabithia as the text is told in third person but in Jess perspective In Bridge to Terabithia Jess experiences the issue of gender roles and being an androgynous character this issue is a key feature to his coming-of-age At the beginning of the text Jess believes that by wining the
