In this essay I intend to compare and contrast two film-movements Italian neorealist1945- 1951 and new Hollywood1962-1980 I will compare these film-movements by relying on two films Dog Day Afternoon 1975 Sidney Lumet from new Hollywood as well as The Bicycle Thief 1948 Vittorio De Sica from Italian neorealist I will be focusing on the post- world war II time period in Italy and post-Vietnam war in United State Of America First I will begin with new Hollywood and its most significant features Afterwards I will be focusing on Italian Neorealism and its Characteristics Throughout The Time That Italy was trying to survive through the damages from world war II Hollywood had the ability to monopolise film industry and even American policy This money and power was helping Hollywood to be able to make even more expensive films than before but at the end of 1950s these expensive movies lost their audiences Influenced by Italian neorealism and French new wave the new Hollywood had appeared The new generation of directors who came from educative background such as film schools and universities made the new Hollywood Their films were popular by the young generation who were tired of old traditions These directors not only wanted to help their audience to live a better life but also wanted to show their art to them and critics Influenced by Italian neorealism the mise-en-scene that was used in the new Hollywoods film focused on realism They used specific style of edition to let the films narrative move forward easily In this editing they were focused on the portraits and close ups Also they were using the eye line establishing the relationship between certain characters In total editing played a highly significant role in the new Hollywood In the new Hollywood they usually did not rely on studio setting for their shots they went to the location and shot their films Also they tried to make their mi-sen-scene shots and
