Two planets in the solar system lie in the habitable zone a term coined by scientists meaning the distance and area around a star that is just the right temperature to sustain life these planets are Earth and Mars Both of these planets orbit within thissweet spot for life Because of the possibility of previous life on Mars it has garnered a lot of attention scientists want to find proof that life once existed on its surface and yet it is still an alien world to most people If life can exist on Mars then what differences does Mars have with the Earth Is Marsgeologically and compositionally different to Earth could Mars sustain life like Earth and has Mars ever sustained life beforeTo begin how does Mars vary to Earth in composition geology and appearance The first difference that sticks out the most is Mars red color which comes from the iron oxide prevalent in its surface Mars looks like a barren desert and water only exists in the form of polar ice caps the atmospheric pressure only lets it melt in low elevations during the warmest months There is evidence that water once flowed on the surface but for now there is none to be found Scientists believe that Mars used to have a magnetosphere a massive magnetic field created by a planets iron core that protected Mars from solar winds but now solar winds constantly strip atmospheric particles from Mars Despite this Mars does have an atmosphere but it is miniscule and composed of mostly carbon-dioxide The lack of a formidable atmosphere leaves Mars exposed to the elements of space and it has been pummeled by comets and asteroids leaving Mars with a cratered surface similar to the MoonIn contrast Earth is very different Earth has a mostly blue appearance due to having 70 of its surface covered in water and because of an active magnetosphere it has a functioning atmosphere Therefore water
