We start out as eager students then as Robert Fried describes The Game of School takes control of us and knocks out the passion to learn replacing it with lesser goals such as getting in the right classes and chasing As My experiences are similar to what Fried describes in the area of academics but very different in the social aspects of school Though I lost my zest to learn I never worried about the type of people I was hanging out with and I always worried about pleasing the teacher and getting good grades Though I was born in Redwood City I always lived with both my parents in Mountain View where I have attended public school since Kindergarten My Game of School was very similar to the one Fried described in The Game of School Contrary to what was said in The Game of School I had mostly positive elementary school experiences Fried says the ranks of motivated learners drop off sharply in the years from early childhood through elementary school Based on my experiences I agree because I also lost my excitement for learning It was always important to me to be a good student so I did what I could to get the best grade I lost my zest for learning particularly in language arts but math was great I have always been good at math perhaps because there is only one answer to a question However in language arts I began to get discouraged because every teacher had a different idea of what is best and there was no correct answer For kindergarten through second grade I went to Landels Elementary School where I had great teachers but was more focused on being popular than learning Before switching to the PACT parent participation program in third grade I decided I wanted to become a better friend to everyone around me One of my most
