In grades three to five students are required to learn about the two explorers who helped mapmakers learn about the geography of the west One of the people that were on expedition was a man named William Clark who was accompanied by his friend Meriwether Lewis The two of them traveled more than 8000 miles over a span of two years United States President Thomas Jefferson wanted to learn more about the land west of the Mississippi River The US had just purchased a huge area of land from the French This land became known as the Louisiana Purchase and the land stretched from the Mississippi River all the way to the Pacific Ocean No Americans had explored that area yet and Jefferson chose Meriwether Lewis to lead the expedition In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by author Mark Twain the main character Tom is very similar to William Clark In almost every chapter Toms actions revolve around adventure In his every day life Tom tries to find new and exciting experiences He would rather live life the way that he wants to then to follow any advice from his elders His Aunt Polly and his brother Sid are always trying to catch him in his acts of mischief Tom and his best friend Huckleberry Finn seek all sorts of adventure William Clark and Tom Sawyer are similar in many ways that are demonstrated in their past experiences Even though these two people are from different eras they both have alike qualities that make them both so similarWilliam Clark and Tom Sawyer share many of the same character traits One of the character traits that they happen to share is the trait of being adventurous Throughout William Clarks two - year expedition he continued to seek adventure while maping out the west While
