As a child everything is a learning experience In both My Creature fromthe Black Lagoon by Stephen King and Learning to Read and Write byFredrick Douglass each author gives real life examples of how they aschildren learned from their own experiences In the first of the twoessays King gives us his own real life examples of how he came torealize that children learn from their experiences He tells how yourealize that with the older you get that there really are things to beafraid of instead of just a monster in the closet In the second of thetwo essays Douglass tells us of his journey of learning how to read andwrite as a slave Both men learned different things as children whereasDouglass learned not only how to read and write but also how cruel theworld could be King learned that the older you get the less you fearthe little things and start to focus that fear onto the things you areor should be afraid of as an adult In Kings essay he talks about overcoming fear and as you get older theeasier it becomes You start to realize that the things you were afraidof as a child arent real You realize that the monster under the bedisnt something to be afraid of until something pulls you back andshows you that the fear you had for the monster under the bed is stilldeep down inside of you King gives the example from a movie entitledThe Brood in which he goes on to say We cut to the bed itselfandclawed hands suddenly reach out from beneath it and dig into thecarpeting near the doomed fathers feet 529 This is a prime exampleof that pent up feeling of being a child again and being afraid of whatis under the bed Douglass as a child realizes that he has to overcomehis fear of punishment in order to learn how to read and write He knowsthat if he is caught he
