The belief that Voltaire had little to no effect on Thomas Jefferson is a false statement according to this research Thomas Jefferson was born on April 2nd 1743 and died on July 4th 1826 while Voltaire was born on November 21st 1694 and died on May 30th 1778 2 6 There was no direct influence on each other but there was a lot of indirect influence For instance Jefferson was influenced by John Adams and Adams was influenced by Voltaire 7There are two main reasons for this conclusion and one of them is their religious beliefs The two men had the same goal when it came to religion they both wanted everyone to have religious freedom and helped try to get that 1 5 Voltaire used his time at law school to help people who were being accused of something relating to religion and that he felt was unfair in a way while Jefferson started his own law practice and help his friends and family in whatever they needed not limited to religion 6 2 They also wanted to separate the Church from the State so that much more of the church was not controlled and they could do more with free religion 3 6 Both believed that god was just an obsession rather than a belief Voltaire did have some belief but Jefferson was known to be more of an infidel or materialist which meant that he did not have a religion and was more about helping people 1 5Another reason is a lot of their political and philosophical views where alike and this cannot be a coincidence An example of one is that they were both liberals and yes many people at in the 17th and
