The brain is like a basketball game There are many things going on at once but they all coordinate together to makes things run smoothlyThe brainstem is the home team Its the reason for the night the team almost everyone is rooting for just as the brainstem is the core of the brain The brainstem is made up of three different parts the medulla the thalamus and the reticular formation The medulla controls the heartbeat and breathing as the love for the game of basketball keeps one motivated and working hard Every team has a couple of captains that lead the team and communicate well with the rest of the team coaches and referees These captains can be compared to the thalamus The thalamus directs sensory messages to the cortex and transmits replies to the cerebellum and medulla The last part of the brainstem the reticular formation is the point guard of the home team HeShe gets the team pumped up and controls the tempo of the game as the reticular formation plays an important role in controlling arousal in the brainThe limbic system is the opposing team but not like its competing against the brainstem The limbic system is associated with emotions and drives just as the opponent creates a drive for the home team to win especially on their home court Part of the limbic system the amygdala is the star player of the opposing team Everything heshe does well bothers the home team to no end The amygdala is linked to emotion just as the star player gets underneath the home teams skin The hypothalamus is the opposing teams coach Their coach is screaming and yelling every time they do something wrong which makes the home team want to continue doing what theyre doing to make the opposing team mess up The hippocampus is the part of the limbic system linked to memory This can be compared to memorizing the opposing teams
