Booker T Washington and WEB DuBois were both great men who accomplished amazing things to help the civil rights movement during the period of 1877 to 1915 Washington believed that in order to achieve equality with white people they needed to prove that they are able to by getting practical jobs DuBois believed that they needed higher education and to make their voice be heard in order to achieve equality Both had the same goal but wanted to go about it completely different ways Washingtons plan although helpful to each individual did not help to achieve civil equality DuBois however brought into public view many injustices that were being done to black people at the time Booker T Washington was the last generation born into slavery in 1856 He was trained as a houseboy and worked in salt furnaces and coalmines while attending school part time until he was able to attend Hampton Institute BOOKER T SOURCE His father was white and he was trained by white people This coexistence with white people softened him to the horrible treatment of other black people in the south through segregation Doc J and lynchings Doc C WEB Dubois was born in 1868 in Great Barrington Massachusetts In 1890 he graduated cum laude from Harvard University and further extended his education to University of Berlin in 1892 Rudwick DuBois received a Ph D from Harvard University He was the first black person to hold that title before his name Because of his very much outnumbered ratio of black to whites in school Doc A he experience racism first hand Black people didnt get doctorates and his fellow students probably pointed that out to him quite often Both mens plans for civil equality mirrored their upbringings Washington went out to believe in an industrialized education and DuBois believed in a higher college level education Washington founded the Tuskegee institute in 1881 The institute was an
