Word Count: 711
It is a sin to kill a mockingbird but many are shot at anyways The strong image of a mockingbird is depicted through several characters in Harper Lees novel To Kill a Mockingbird and Dr Seuss The Sneetches Examples of racism and innocence are shown in both selections The first narrative To Kill a Mockingbird a fictional novel follows the lives of Scout Finch Jem Finch their father Atticus Finch and Tom Robinson who all symbolize mockingbirds In the novel Atticus was to defend a Tom Robinson an African American man in court because Tom was accused of raping a white girl Differences in social status were explored greatly through the convoluted social hierarchy of Maycomb which is the setting of the book Since Atticus was defending a black many of the people from Maycomb thought almost as poorly of him and his children as they did of African Americans Although the Finch family was innocent the situation negatively affected their lives Both kids that went to school with Jem and Scout and immature adults like Mr Cunningham didnt treat the Finchs well because of the situation in court In spite of the fact that Atticus defending Tom Robinson brought much negativity into the lives of him and his family it also positively affected their lives by teaching them all a rather valuable lesson Atticus and his kids learned not judge anyone without walking in their shoes and seeing things from their point of view The second piece The Sneetches a short childrens book is about how sneetches with stars upon their bellies were racist and prejudice against sneetches who didnt have stars on their bellies The plain bellied sneetches were mockingbirds which resemble innocence They had done nothing wrong to deserve the treatment they received from the star bellied sneetches In the story Sylvester McMonkey McBean came along and offered to give the sneetches without stars on their bellies stars if they paid
