Complexity is what makes life interesting passionate and riveting it is also what makes life difficult heart-wrenching and demanding When difficult situations arise people tend to circumvent them as much as possible In Susan Faludis short work The Naked Citadel she explores the underlying problems with sexuality among an all-male military academy The masculine mentality is challenged by Shannon Faulkner who applied to and was granted access to the academy However she did not mark her gender stating whether she was female which led to a controversial court case In Beth Loffredas Selections from Losing Matt Shepard she recounts the death of a gay student in the town of Laramie The reporters label the murder as a hate crime and the media frenzy ensues As a result the townspeople of Laramie mold to the expectations of the media trying to convey themselves as a peaceful town What these two works have in common is the blatant hypocrisy of the human mind People claim to believe in fairness to all and equality however when faced with an extremely difficult situation people fall into their underlying prejudices At the Citadel the cadets become sexist against Faulkner as a result of their underdeveloped sexuality In Laramie the media forces the townspeople to suppress their inner thoughts regarding homosexuals whether it be positive or negative By succumbing to obvious stereotypes people allow themselves to warp the blatant reality in front of them and minimize the emotional pain that comes with itInstead of facing the harsh realities at hand the cadets of the Citadel and the media regarding Matt Shepards murder blame the obvious scapegoats The cadets are in a submerged gender battle a bitter but definitely fixed contest between the sexes concealed from view by the fact that men played both partsby casting male freshman knobs in all the subservient feminine roles Faludi 90 By
