In John Updikes story AP is written from the perspective of a nineteen year-old boy Sammy who works at a grocery store The grocery store AP is in the center of a small beach town He sees the regular shoppers that are very old and conventional people Then three girls walk in wearing nothing but bathing suits By the end of the story Sammy risks his job for the girls Throughout the story John Updike subtly reveals Sammys ambivalent feelings towards the girls From behind Sammys counter he sees the regular shoppers that he refers to as sheep He calls them that because they herd together complain are slow moving have a regular routine and are old fashioned There also is the manager Lengel He wants what his shoppers want for the grocery store which in return makes him a bit old fashioned as well Together they are a group of conventional people aiming to keep the normal grocery store running regularly Suddenly in walks three girls wearing only their bathing suits This was surprising because bikinis were a new style then and uncommon to see John Updike has this in the story to show them challenging the regular way of life Sammy then starts making remarks on their appearance There is a tall girl who has black frizzy hair a chubby girl with a berry face and a girl who he refers to as Queenie because she seemed to lead the other girls He starts to focus more on Queenie and how she acts He notices her confidence as she saunters between the aisles When Lengel tells the girls We want you decently dressed when you come in hereand she boldly answers saying We are decent She when she says decent she is talking about her class She knows that higher up and wealthier than almost everyone in the store Sammy sees that she thinks she is able to what she
