As the economy shows signs of recovery economists dont see USconsumers spending freely again for a while given the weak job marketand high debt levels-Ben Steverman As Ben Steverman a writer forBusiness Week wrote the job market is directly related consumerspending and how consumer spending is affected by job losses and gainsThis topic interests me because I am a consumer that has a job and myspending is based off of how much money I make at my job and how securemy job is There are some points that show the relation between consumerjob losses and gains those points are consumers spend less money asincomes decrease due to job losses when consumers gain jobs and morejobs are created in the labor market consumer spending increases andthe labor market is an indication of consumer spending which directlyimpacts the state of the economyThe first point is that consumers spend less money as incomes decreasedue to job losses According to Lynn Franco director of the ConferenceBoard research groups research center in an interview from an articlein Business Week Weak income expectations will continue to holdback consumer spending Lynn Franco proves the point that consumerswill spend less money when incomes are lowered In the same interviewLynn Franco states Pessimism persists two years later because of thedouble whammy of job losses and the drop in home values which haveleft consumers quite cautious even as financial markets reboundedFranco is referring to the end of the recession in 2009 and the cautiousspending of consumers even after the end of the recession This showsthat consumer spending is still low after the recession ended in 2009The next point is when consumers gain jobs and more jobs are created inthe labor market consumer spending increases According to BenSteverman in an article he wrote for Business Week As Americans feelwealthier they may be more willing to spend This shows that ifAmericans can keep their jobs then they will feel wealthier which willcause them to spend more
