Poverty affects millions of Americans in the US every year and struggle for a better life Living in poverty is the state or condition of having little or no money goods or means of support In the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry the Youngers are a black family who live in a tiny crowded apartment in South Chicago and barely have any money to support themselves Characters such as Walter Beneatha and Ruth are not able to achieve their dreams due to the constraints they have because of poverty and it affects each individual in a negative way Poverty generally has a bigger impact on men because they are expected to be the caregivers of their families and when they are not able to it makes them feel unmanly Walter Younger is Ruths husband Traviss dad Beneathas brother and Lenas son He is supposed to take the role of the soul provider and man of the house but instead he acts childish and is in constant competition with life All this negative energy Walter portrays is due to the fact he is unsatisfied with his life His job as a chauffer makes him feel gloomy and unmanly because hes driving around white rich people and not advancing or striving to be someone in life Also the main cause why Walter and Ruth are always fight is because of money issues he tells Ruth And what you know about who is just a good-for-nothing loudmouth Charlie Atkins was just a good-for-nothing loudmouth too wasnt he Walter doesnt really care how or where money comes from just as long as he has it hell be content This relates back to how selfish he is when Mama receives the 10000 dollars from the death of his father Walter right away wants a share and wants to invest it all into his dream liquor store However this exemplifies how desperate Walter wants to achieve
