In Haunai-Kay Trasks article Lovely Hula Hands Corporate Tourism and the Prostitution of Hawaiian Culture 2013 she notes the hidden discrepancy between Hawaii America and the globalized culture Trask argues how Hawaii and its Hawaiian culture have been misinterpreted as a paradise Trask illustrates this by discussing pre and post American-colonial Hawaiian history Hawaiis economy genealogy of Hawaiians and Hawaiis traditional practices Ultimately Trask broadly claims that the induction of Hawaii becoming a state as part of the US is only weakening the Hawaiian economy culture and peoples In Fay Yokomizo Akindes article Sudden Rush Na Mele Paleoleo Hawaiian Rap as Liberatory Discourse 2001 she notes Hawaiian music Na Mele Paleoleo and its development with African-American hip-hop Fay also discusses two points the history of Hawaii and its music and the Hawaiian diaspora The reason why I chose to compare and contrast the Trask and Akindes article was because of their topic and discussion of Hawaii and its socio-political aspects which surround Hawaii As both authors discuss Hawaiis socio-political and economical state both authors also agree on the Hawaiian population becoming more diasporic Both Trask and Akindes believe that the sense of Hawaiian identity is becoming globalized and thus losing their true Hawaiian sense of identity Broadly speaking Akindes article differs from Trasks article as Akindes approaches her discussion with a Hawaiian musical example such as Sudden Rush However Trasks article differs from Akindes article in the sense of representation Trask conveys her ideas in a militant way expressing her feelings about the American colonisation However the differences and similarities continue not only in the representation of their ideas but also in each authors methodological approach Trask uses various methodological approaches such as historical texts census statistics and socio-political discourse within her article Ultimately Trasks heavily utilises historical sources in order to inform the reader about Hawaii and its colonised past However the criticism I have with Trasks methodological approach was
