Michayla KramerJames BurnsAmerican National GovernmentDecember 5 2013Keystone PipelineThe United States is the worlds top crude oil consumer With nearly 679 billion barrels 2012 est consumed annually the United States account for nearly 22 of total world petroleum consumption This large demand requires an even larger supply Unable to produce a large enough supply to satisfy the countrys demand the United States rely on net imports for 40 of the petroleum consumed EIA This foreign dependence on oil has led to elevated gas prices Within the borders of the United States a solution has been proposed the Keystone XL KXL Pipeline The KXL is a proposed 7 billion expansion to the existing Keystone Pipelines The existing pipeline begins in the oil sand fields of Alberta Canada and ends in Cushing Oklahoma Currently there is a bottleneck of oil in Cushing The expansion would first cover the 1700 miles between Cushing and the Gulf Coast of Texas where oil refineries abound Second it would include a new section running from Alberta to Kansas This would pass through the Bakken region of eastern Montana and western North Dakota This is a region where oil extraction is currently booming This expansion would in total cover six states Montana South Dakota Nebraska Kansas Oklahoma and Texas Marks According to the official Keystone XL Pipeline website This pipeline is a critical infrastructure project for the energy security of the United States and for strengthening the American economy It would also support the growth of crude oil production within the United States particularly in the aforementioned Bakken region in Montana and North Dakota The pipeline will have the capacity of transporting 830000 barrels of oil per day to Gulf Coast and Midwest Refineries Keystone XL In May of 2012 the US Department of State receive the application from TransCanada Corp proposing the KXL New Keystone XL Pipeline The State Department investigated the proposal before drafting a formal proposal to present to
