The year was 1863 when my brother Joseph and I packed up for ChicagoIllinois Our father was there waiting for our arrival We were supposedto head off at the start of the month of May but our mamma had grownill with yellow fever at the end of April She passed away a few weeksbefore the end of may so the trip was rescheduled for the beginning ofJune Joseph and myself were very excited to be starting a new life inAmerica Are small village in Bohemia just did not have a theopportunities in farming and business starting that America promisedIt will be nice to see our father again considering its been nearlysix months I thought as Joseph and myself boarded the ship that wouldbe carrying us to America It was a large ship with not a lot ofaccessories But what it lacked in accessories it definitely made up forin people People People everywhere Large families with smallchildren small families with children old couples young couplessingles All hoping to achieve the goal of the american dreamUnfortunately for many people they would either never have the chanceof leaving Bohemia or would not survive the journey overAs soon as Joseph and I found a place to settle down on the boat amillion thoughts started going through our minds It was hard to imaginethat in fifteen days we would be in a whole new country The farthestany of my family had been away from Bohemia was Prague which was notsaying much The large ship quickly lost its vast feeling By the thirdday everywhere on the ship to explore had been explored and all thepeople added to the feeling of claustrophobia On the fifth day morepeople were becoming ill and towards the seventh day the food supplywas low The adventure my nineteen year old brother and I had been soexcited to take had lost its sense of excitement days ago There was aday towards the end that I actually feared we
